How is night shift pay calculated?

Your base hourly rate applies to all hours worked. For night hours, a bonus percentage is added on top of the base rate. The night rate = base rate × (1 + bonus% ÷ 100).

Example: Base rate $18/hour, 25% night bonus. Night rate = $18 × 1.25 = $22.50/hour. If you work 4 day hours + 4 night hours: day pay = $72, night pay = $90, total = $162.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a typical night shift bonus?

Night shift bonuses typically range from 20% to 50% above the base hourly rate, depending on the industry, contract, and country. Healthcare workers often receive 25–30% night bonuses.

What hours count as night shift?

Night shift hours are typically defined as hours worked between 10 PM and 6 AM, though exact definitions vary by country and employment contract. Some contracts define night hours as 11 PM to 7 AM.

Is night shift bonus calculated on top of base pay?

Yes, the night bonus is an additional amount on top of your base hourly rate for each night hour worked. If your base rate is $18/hour and your night bonus is 25%, you earn $22.50/hour for night hours.

Do I also get overtime on top of the night bonus?

If you work overtime during a night shift, both the overtime multiplier and the night bonus typically apply — but this depends on your contract. Use the overtime calculator or the full salary calculator for combined calculations.
